New Math Standards
Fitzgerald Public Schools are working to realign our math curriculum to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Students are expected to have a deeper understanding of mathematic concepts as well to apply concepts to problem solving. Students are expected to model their thought process as well as explain in writing how they came to their answer. This is a much higher standard than before and may be reflected in student grades.
Fourth grade is utilizing READY Common Core Workbooks as well as xtramath.org and Study Island. Mrs. Hasse, who teaches Math Enrichment special once a week, reinforces these concepts. Fourth grade interventionist, Miss Bowling, works with a small group of students each day on developing skills.
Fourth grade students need to know their basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in order to solving more complex multiplication and division, recognize number patterns, and problem solving. To be considered proficient fourth-graders must solve 50 facts in 3 minutes with 90% accuracy. That is solving a fact in 3 seconds.
